Ikea is piloting an online buyback service that lets customers trade in unwanted secondhand furniture for vouchers. The retailer says the service will be tested in Spain and Portugal before the end of December, with a UK rollout planned if the pilot proves successful.

Ikea already offers buyback in stores, including in the UK, and the online version is intended to extend the option to a wider customer base. The move comes as demand grows for resale markets, with outlets noting that pre-loved goods are becoming a larger share of the homewares market. One outlet frames the launch as a step that could position Ikea more directly alongside online resale platforms.

Different coverage emphasizes different aspects: one highlights Ikea’s planned geography and the staged approach to expansion, while another focuses on the potential competition with services such as Vinted and eBay. Both, however, agree on the core plan: an online buyback trial in selected countries first, then the possibility of expansion to the UK following results.
