South Korea and Canada’s top diplomats agree to broaden cooperation across defense, energy, and artificial intelligence during telephone talks. South Korea’s foreign ministry says Foreign Minister Cho Hyun and Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand align on expanding “practical cooperation” in defense and the arms industry, building on their existing bilateral Security and Defense Cooperation Partnership.
The partnership, created in October 2025 after a summit in Gyeongju, is described as Canada’s first security and defense partnership with an Indo-Pacific country. The ministers also plan to pursue discussions on advanced technologies, including AI, tied to a joint committee on science and technology scheduled to be held in Seoul next month.
Beyond defense and technology, both sides emphasize energy cooperation aimed at ensuring stable supplies. They also call for continuing bilateral and multilateral discussions on critical mineral supply chains, reflecting trade links that include South Korea’s imports of Canadian crude oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG).
