Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) presidential candidate Donald Duke says President Bola Tinubu is likely to win Nigeria’s 2027 election if major opposition figures—Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi—do not unite. Speaking on Channels Television’s programmes, Duke argues that a divided opposition vote would repeat patterns from the 2023 presidential election that benefited the incumbent.
Duke specifically points to the split between Atiku, associated with the African Democratic Congress, and Obi, associated with the Nigeria Democratic Congress, saying competing separate campaigns would make it harder for challengers to defeat the ruling All Progressives Congress. He attributes some of the opposition’s lack of unity to personal rivalries, describing it as driven by the “large egos” of the aspirants, and he contrasts Nigeria’s situation with the two-party structure he says exists in the United States.
Across the reports, the differing emphasis is on the same central claim: unity is presented as the opposition’s best route to challenge Tinubu, while continued fragmentation is portrayed as the condition most likely to secure Tinubu another term.
