Americans’ expectations for inflation over the next year rise to the highest level since May 2023, according to the New York Fed’s Survey of Consumer Expectations. In September, the median one-year-ahead inflation outlook increases to 3.9%, up from 3.6% the previous month.

The survey also shows a broader set of household responses. Consumers’ expectations for spending growth over the coming year climb to a three-year high, and their views on the labor market improve, including a higher perceived chance of finding a new job if they lose one. At the same time, longer-horizon inflation expectations are mixed, with the three-year measure reported at 3.3% and the five-year measure at 3.0%. Some outlets also note deterioration in perceptions of households’ own finances and changes in credit conditions, alongside details on expected cost increases for categories such as gasoline, food, and medical care.
