Alibaba co-founder and chairman Joe Tsai says open-source artificial intelligence is Europe’s best path to technological independence. Speaking in Turin at an event described by The Next Web as aimed at founders and investors, he argues that Europe can reduce dependency on outside vendors by adopting open software approaches for AI development.
Across outlets, Tsai also calls for Europe to build its own computing and AI infrastructure for training and running models. Quartz adds that he warns relying on foreign technology can leave countries exposed to risks such as supply cutoffs, and he urges Europe to train AI using industrial data. Bloomberg similarly reports that he frames open source as a way to lessen dependence on US and China, positioning Europe’s infrastructure investment and data access as key steps. The outlets differ mainly in emphasis—some highlight independence, others focus on infrastructure, industrial datasets, or supply-chain vulnerability—but all attribute the same core message to Tsai: Europe should develop AI capabilities more locally and using open-source methods.
