Mumbai’s sessions court on Wednesday fines Mayor Ritu Tawde ₹1,000 for skipping a hearing in a case linked to allegations of assault on teachers at a municipal Urdu-medium school in 2016. The court also warns that her bail could be cancelled and a warrant may be issued if she does not appear at the next hearing.

Her lawyer, Durga Rajput, requests a permanent exemption from personal appearance, citing the mayor’s commitments at BMC events. The prosecution opposes the plea, noting the case is about seven years old and highlighting repeated non-appearances. The court records that a prior hearing already resulted in a ₹300 cost for failing to attend, and it allowed an exemption from personal appearance for one day while still imposing the new fine payable to the government.

The court refers to the timeline of the matter, saying the incident is from 2016, the chargesheet was filed in 2017, and the case was committed to the sessions court in 2019. Another court condition mentioned is that permanent exemption may be considered after charges are framed, subject to how the trial proceeds without prejudice to her rights and cross-examination.
