Astronomers report evidence of a thin atmosphere around (612533) 2002 XV93, a very small icy body beyond Pluto in the outer solar system. Multiple outlets describe the object as roughly 500 km across (about 300 miles) and categorize it as a “plutino,” with an orbit that places it in resonance with Neptune. The finding comes from observations of how the object briefly blocks (occults) a distant star, producing a “refractive signature” consistent with a global, gravity-bound atmosphere rather than a sharp, instantaneous dimming.
The proposed atmosphere is far less substantial than Earth’s, with estimates cited in reports placing it millions of times thinner than Earth’s protective air and tens to hundreds of times thinner than Pluto’s already tenuous atmosphere. Scientists say the atmosphere challenges assumptions that only larger bodies can sustain detectable global atmospheres.
Researchers suggest possible origins, including an impact by another body (such as a comet) or cryovolcanic/volcanic-like activity that releases gases from inside the object. Several reports note that the results need independent confirmation, potentially including follow-up observations with NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to help determine the atmosphere’s composition (suggested candidates include methane, nitrogen, and carbon monoxide).
