Multiple outlets report findings from a study suggesting that people taking GLP-1 weight-loss or diabetes medications—including semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound)—report certain nail changes more often than nonusers. Reported issues include nail detachment (onycholysis) and nail discoloration, along with other nail changes such as ridges or fragile nails.

According to the study abstract described by outlets, nail separation or detachment is reported by about 39% of GLP-1 users versus about 9% of nonusers. Nail discoloration is reported by about 46% of users versus about 17% of nonusers. Outlets also note that the association weakens when looking only at changes that begin after treatment starts, and that roughly half of GLP-1 users had nail problems before starting. Researchers say this pattern suggests the effects may be partly related to overall health, weight loss, nutritional factors, or skin conditions rather than a direct drug effect.

A companion study discussed alongside the nail findings reports higher rates of hair loss and scalp redness among GLP-1 users. All outlets emphasize that the research is based on self-reported symptoms at one time point, limiting conclusions about whether GLP-1 drugs directly cause the changes.
