The Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) rejects an indefinite strike announced by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) for the territory. After an emergency meeting, ASUSS directs secondary school teachers and education officers to report for duty and continue normal academic activities.

ASUSS describes the strike as premature and warns that it could disrupt schooling and harm students’ education. The union also tells its members to ignore the “stay-at-home” instruction. It responds to concerns cited by the NUT, including vacancies, promotions, and the redeployment of directors within education agencies, arguing these issues are governed by public service rules and management’s statutory powers and should be handled through dialogue rather than industrial action.

ASUSS also cites timing around scheduled promotion activities, including 2025/2026 promotion examinations for education officers, urging eligible staff to follow the published timetable. It calls on parents and guardians to continue sending children to school while directing principals and education officers to keep schools open, monitor attendance, and disregard instructions from what it calls unauthorized bodies that could affect the academic calendar.
