A car plunges into a sinkhole after a section of road caves in near Tidel Park in Chennai’s Thiruvanmiyur area on Thursday morning. The vehicle overturns inside a crater estimated at about 10 feet deep, but the two occupants manage to escape before the car fully falls in and are reported to be unhurt.
Outlets link the collapse to the same busy stretch of Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) where Metro-related construction work is underway. Traffic is disrupted as motorists face congestion while authorities and workers secure the site, remove the vehicle, and begin restoration and repair operations to fill the collapsed portion of the road.
One report also recalls a similar road cave-in in the same area in May 2025, when an ageing sewage pipeline reportedly failed and left a smaller crater and multiple injuries, highlighting concerns about road condition and underlying underground infrastructure along corridors undergoing major works.
