E-commerce company Coupang files lawsuits seeking to overturn fines imposed after a large-scale data breach. Multiple sources say the company challenges a record 624.7 billion won penalty levied by South Korea’s Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC), bringing the disputed amount to about 620 billion won in filings.

The PIPC’s June decision includes separate components: a 423.6 billion won fine tied to the data breach affecting more than 37 million users, and an additional 201.1 billion won related to unauthorized collection of online user activity records and other violations. Outlets report that Coupang files two cases with the Seoul Administrative Court aimed at nullifying the fines. The regulator’s action follows Coupang’s late disclosure of the breach, which it reported more than six months after the incident, in November, when user information such as names, phone numbers and delivery details was exposed.

While the outlets’ core details align on the fine’s size, the breach’s estimated impact, and the court filings, they mainly differ in how much background they include beyond the summary of the administrative challenge.
