Gunmen abduct 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members on the Owerri–Onitsha expressway and later release them, after relatives report paying ransom. Police in Imo State say they do not confirm any ransom payment details, while multiple family accounts describe payments made to secure the victims’ freedom.

In interviews aired by local media, a mother of one freed NYSC member says kidnappers demanded N50 million per victim and later reduced the demand to N6 million for her son. She adds that representatives were asked to meet the abductors in Ibadan and to transfer money through an account for conversion into dollars in Imo. Other reports from relatives state they paid millions of naira, with figures ranging from about N3 million to N6 million.

Imo State Police Commissioner Audu Bosso denies awareness of any ransom payment, rejecting rumours on the matter. Police had announced that the victims were rescued on 7 October 2026 in Amakohia Ubi Village, Imo State, following coordinated search-and-rescue operations involving police, military and the Department of State Services (DSS), with some victims rescued early and others freed later.
