US Vice President JD Vance says the Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a US visa programme and investigating nine elite universities for alleged visa fraud or abuse.
Speaking at the White House, Vance says Microsoft is being suspended from the H-1B programme as part of a broader fraud crackdown, arguing the company laid off thousands of American workers while using H-1B visas to replace them. Vance also says Adobe is being suspended. Microsoft disputes Vance’s characterization, saying most of its H-1B filings are for extending or changing the status of existing employees, that the remaining applications involve people already legally in the US, and that H-1B workers are paid comparably to other staff.
Vance also announced investigations into Yale, Harvard, Stanford, Brown, MIT, UC Davis, Caltech, Arizona State University and the University of Pittsburgh, citing alleged misuse of the J-1 visa exchange programme and claims that the institutions undercut wages for American graduate students and researchers. Outlets report Vance frames the effort as an anti-fraud enforcement action, while Microsoft and the universities involved have not been shown in these reports to have been found in violation.
