Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa appoints businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei as Minister of Economic Development and Investment Promotion, following a reshuffle of the economic team. Bloomberg reports the move as part of splitting Zimbabwe’s finance ministry into two separate portfolios.
Several outlets say the new economic development ministry was created from work previously housed under Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube’s portfolio. Zimbabwe Independent and 263Chat also report that Ncube remains Minister of Finance after the reorganisation. New Zimbabwe describes Tagwirei as a close political ally of Ncube and characterizes his rise in Zimbabwean politics as rapid.
While the outlets differ slightly in wording, they broadly agree on the personnel changes and the structure of the reshuffle: Ncube continues leading finance, and Tagwirei takes charge of the newly established economic development and investment promotion role.
