The Benue State Education Quality Assurance and Examinations Board (BEQAEB) seals two schools in Makurdi—Orenda and Opal—over alleged violations of the state’s textbook purchase and reuse policy. Multiple outlets report that the enforcement action includes allegations that parents are forced to buy learning materials directly from the schools.
Reports also cite claims of mistreatment of learners. Vanguard and Daily Post say the board links the sealing to alleged victimisation of pupils, in addition to non-compliance with textbook rules. Daily Post adds that the alleged conduct includes forcing parents to purchase exercise and test books directly from the schools. The enforcement exercise is led by BEQAEB’s Executive Secretary, Dr Terna Francis, with officials from the board’s Directorate of Enforcement and Compliance.
While all accounts agree on the schools involved and the government action, they differ slightly in emphasis—some foreground forced textbook purchases, while others highlight alleged victimisation of learners alongside policy breaches.
