Israeli opposition figure Yair Golan says the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was a “mistake.” Speaking in Israel, Golan argues that while Khamenei may have deserved to die, eliminating him did not serve Israel’s national interests.
Golan also criticises Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, saying Netanyahu’s stated aim of toppling Iran’s government was “unrealistic” and has not been achieved. According to the outlets, Golan makes this point in the context of Khamenei’s death occurring at the beginning of the US-Israel war involving Iran.
The reports add that Khamenei has been succeeded by his son, Mojtaba Khamenei. Golan contends the leadership transition leaves Iran with “more extreme and violent individuals,” compared with Khamenei, who had issued a 2003 fatwa banning nuclear weapons. Overall, the coverage focuses on Golan’s political assessment rather than new details about the assassination itself.
