Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick rejects claims that Red Dead Online was a “missed opportunity,” arguing that the mode has been successful and long-lasting. Multiple outlets report that Zelnick points to Red Dead Redemption 2’s online component as performing well “by all accounts,” despite criticism that Red Dead Online receives fewer updates and is not as actively supported as Grand Theft Auto Online. One report notes that major update work for Red Dead Online slows and effectively stops several years ago, with Rockstar citing a need to redirect development resources to its next entry in the series. While some observers frame the shift away from Red Dead Online as a strategic misstep compared with the ongoing momentum of GTA Online, Zelnick’s stance is that Red Dead Online’s outcome does not reflect a missed chance. The coverage also cites a large sales figure associated with Red Dead Redemption 2, with Zelnick stating the game has sold 85 million copies. Overall, the reports present a contrast between external criticism focused on update cadence and Zelnick’s emphasis on the mode’s longevity and results.

As Rockstar gear up to release GTA 6 (at least on consoles), spare a thought for Red Dead Online. The multiplayer element of Red Dead Redemption 2 had its steady flow of major update-carrying stagecoaches stopped all the way back in 2022, with its makers explicitly citing a desire to shift those development resources over to that next entry in the stealy wheels series. There've been a few moments in the years since when Red Dead Online has looked a bit like it might bounce back to prominence, but nothing substantial in that vein has materialised. It essentially had a solid three year run, but failed to come close to grasping the reins from its older inspiration, GTA Online. In the eyes of Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, however, that doesn't make it a missed opportunity. Read more
