A new U.S. government survey finds that families headed by someone aged 75 or older have become the country’s wealthiest age group over the past three years. The report says median net worth for the oldest families rises sharply compared with 2022, while wealth declines among the youngest families.
According to the outlets, the gains for the 75-and-older group are supported by steady improvements in stock markets. One report cites median net worth for families in this age group rising to nearly US$505,000, up from just over US$367,000 in 2022. Another figure highlights that the richest one-tenth of families see median net worth increase to about $3.6 million from 2022 to 2025.
While all accounts attribute the shift largely to market performance, they emphasize different measures—median net worth for the oldest group versus broader gains among the wealthiest segment—arriving at the common conclusion that wealth growth has concentrated among older households.
