The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says a Toronto police officer is cleared of wrongdoing after an exchange of gunfire that resulted in the death of Const. Marc Pinizzotto during an emergency task force raid on June 11. The SIU reports that Nicholas Bennett, 19, opened fire during the operation, fatally striking Pinizzotto, and then officers shot Bennett while he was inside an apartment unit in North York.
The SIU concludes there are no reasonable grounds to believe a criminal offence was committed. In its account, the officers believed their lives were in danger and that they needed to defend themselves to prevent grievous bodily harm or death. Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw says the investigation’s conclusion does not lessen the force’s loss, describing Pinizzotto as a respected member and colleague.
The outlets align on the central findings: the SIU review closes without charges, the shooting involves an officer firing back at Bennett during the raid, and Pinizzotto dies in the line of duty. Differences in coverage are limited to emphasis and wording rather than the underlying facts described by the SIU.
