Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke is detained by Delhi Police at the airport ahead of a planned protest at Jantar Mantar. Media reports say Dipke and fellow CJP members Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka are held shortly after arriving at Indira Gandhi International Airport for a demonstration on Saturday, Oct 10. The protest was linked to allegations of manipulation of electoral rolls during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process and to calls for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
As Dipke remains in detention, his 85-year-old paternal grandmother, Savitribai Shankarrao Dipke, dies in Maharashtra’s Hingoli district. NDTV and other outlets report family members say she had been ill for days or weeks. Times of India reports Delhi Police says Dipke is informed of his grandmother’s death and can decide whether to fly back for last rites, while the party alleges he has not been contacted or reached during detention.
The CJP and Dipke’s parents criticize the police action, with his mother and father saying they feared arrest and accusing the government of undermining democratic rights. Delhi Police’s reported position is that permission for the Jantar Mantar demonstration was denied. The allegations concerning electoral rolls are disputed.
