South Korean authorities are stepping up enforcement against cheating using AI-powered smart glasses during the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT), commonly known as Suneung. The Ministry of Education plans to require exam supervisors to inspect all examinees wearing glasses before each testing session. Under the rules, simply possessing the devices can be treated as cheating. Students found violating the policy face invalidation of their scores and restrictions on taking the exam the following year.
The measures come after several recent incidents involving applicants using AI glasses to gain an advantage. Reports describe cases where students wore regular eyewear when checks were conducted, then switched to AI glasses after exams began. Yonhap and other outlets say a student was caught at Yonsei University during a mathematics essay exam on Oct. 10, and a similar incident was reported at the University of Seoul in early October. In the University of Seoul case, the applicant was removed from the test and banned from that school’s entrance exam for three years. Yonsei University is reviewing potential action in its case.
