Apple expands how HomePod speakers can be used with Macs by allowing certain models to become the Mac’s default audio output device. Reporting from multiple outlets says the feature applies to Macs with Wi‑Fi 6E or later, and it lets users route Mac audio—including system notification sounds—to a HomePod. Depending on the setup, a single speaker can be used or two speakers can be configured for stereo output.
The HomePod mini 2 is presented as the main focus, with outlets listing compatible Mac models such as newer Mac mini, MacBook Pro, Mac Studio, iMac, and MacBook Air configurations. One outlet also notes that the HomePod mini 2’s multi-speaker surround setup is tied to a newer Apple TV 4K generation. In addition to the mini 2, Apple’s documentation indicates the full-sized HomePod (2nd generation) can also act as a default speaker on compatible Wi‑Fi 6E+ Macs. Older HomePod mini models can connect via AirPlay, but sources agree this cannot be set as the default output and may add audio latency.
