Watercare, Auckland’s water and waste services provider, apologises after a billing system error causes more than $6 million to be deducted ahead of schedule from 43,835 customer accounts. The problem occurs on Monday when some credit card and direct debit payments process earlier than the intended billing date, creating an unexpected cash flow strain for households.

Watercare says the error is linked to a malfunction during an upgrade to its billing system. The early transactions can leave some customers facing overdrafts or additional banking fees, unless they are able to reverse the payment. To help, the company offers affected customers the option to have the payment reversed, which requires them to manually settle the bill once the scheduled due date arrives.

Across outlets, Consumer NZ and other reporting emphasise the potential downstream impact on customers, including bank fees or reimbursement for losses. Consumer advocates say customers should seek refunds and reimbursement where applicable, highlighting that the reversal process places some responsibility on customers to identify themselves for assistance.
