Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) co-conveners Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka are arrested and sent to five days’ judicial custody after police say they violated peace bonds and entered Jantar Mantar despite it being denotified as a designated protest site. The activists protested against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, and police and multiple outlets link the arrests to their tricolour display during the demonstration.

Opposition leaders react sharply. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi calls waving the national flag during what he describes as a peaceful protest “not a crime” and says Jantar Mantar belongs to the people. Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal, and other parties—including Left parties and several politicians outside the INDIA bloc—question whether carrying the tricolour should lead to police action and demand the activists’ release. Some also allege the government is trying to restrict or intimidate protest.

CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke urges “tiranga” marches in Delhi on October 16 at Connaught Place and in other cities. Other outlets report he also accuses the government of pitting CJP against opposition groups through different police responses, while Dipke insists CJP remains an independent pressure group even as protests share concerns about the Election Commission and the government.
