Hong Kong’s four franchised bus operators apply to increase fares by as much as 17.7%, citing significant financial pressure linked to soaring fuel prices amid the ongoing war in the Middle East.
According to filings submitted to Hong Kong’s Transport and Logistics Bureau and presented to the Legislative Council, Citybus requests the highest rise of 17.7%. Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB) seeks a 16% increase, while Long Win Bus and New Lantao Bus apply for smaller adjustments of 8.1% and 9.8% respectively.
Outlets report the proposals as separate applications by each operator, with the main common point being the operators’ stated explanation: increased fuel costs. Reporting also differs slightly in how much detail each outlet includes about the extent of the pressures and the specific documentation provided to the legislature, but they converge on the same maximum increase and the requested rates for each company.
