The Philippine government plans to start distributing free portable water filtration kits to communities next week to help ensure access to potable water as a “super” El Niño is expected to affect water supply. Social Welfare Secretary Rex Gatchalian announced the rollout, framing it as part of preparations for reduced or stressed freshwater availability.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) says the devices will be accompanied by guidance on how to use them, including demonstrations of installing a filtration setup on a bucket. At a Palace briefing, officials demonstrated the system and said the filtered water is safe to drink, with statements emphasizing that the process produces “clean” water. Across reports, the emphasis is on immediate community support—distribution of the kits and instruction on use—rather than changes to policy or longer-term infrastructure.
