China’s Supreme People’s Court says it will study and develop adjudication rules for cases involving cryptocurrencies and artificial intelligence, while the country’s existing ban on cryptocurrency activity remains in force. The announcement comes as related disputes and legal matters continue to appear, prompting the court to focus on how such cases should be handled in the judicial system.
According to reporting from multiple outlets, the court’s planned work builds on earlier guidance issued earlier this year. In February, China released a joint notice that expanded enforcement and further defined the scope of the crackdown on crypto-related activities. The new effort by the top court is presented as an attempt to shape how lower courts should apply relevant standards when addressing crypto- and AI-linked matters.
The move does not change the underlying regulatory position toward cryptocurrencies, which is still prohibited under current policy. Instead, it signals a judicial focus on process and rule-setting as the number of related cases increases.
