Delhi Police serves a formal notice to Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, instructing him to join an investigation into allegations of sexual harassment involving students at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). Police issued the notice through officers at Vasant Kunj North police station, directing him to participate in the probe under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The action follows the registration of an FIR based on a complaint filed by JNU’s chief security officer.
According to reports, Akoijam—who is also described as a professor and associated with JNU—faces allegations tied to conduct after inviting female students to his house on the pretext of meetings. JNU has already dismissed him from service after an internal inquiry conducted under the POSH framework, with multiple sources describing the dismissal as immediate. Akoijam disputes the allegations, characterising the inquiry as politically motivated and raising claims about procedural issues. BJP-linked student and women’s groups hold protests and seek action from oversight bodies, while the NCW chairperson says the commission will look into the matter.
The differing coverage focuses on the procedural next steps from Delhi Police, JNU’s internal findings and dismissal, and the competing claims about process and motivation raised by Akoijam and his supporters.
