India’s newly appointed women’s cricket captain Smriti Mandhana says taking full-time leadership will not change how she approaches batting. Mandhana, who has served as vice-captain for about a decade, was named captain earlier this month after Harmanpreet Kaur stepped down. In her first media appearance as captain, she frames the role as a continuation of leadership experience rather than a completely new challenge.
Mandhana tells reporters she will continue to bat with the same mindset, prioritising the team’s needs and “trusting” her instincts, including being aggressive when the ball is in her zone. She also highlights that India still has areas to improve, particularly in the shortest format, even with recent successes.
In preparation for the inaugural Women’s Champions Trophy in February 2027, Mandhana points to India’s upcoming white-ball series against Zimbabwe beginning October 16 as an opportunity to learn from opponents and set standards for the months ahead. Outlets also note her emphasis on building momentum through a run of matches before the tournament.
