Surveyors in France report a new measurement of Mont Blanc’s summit at 4,807.47 metres above sea level, following an expedition to bring instruments to the peak at dawn. The updated figure is nearly two metres higher than the 2023 measurement, highlighting that the mountain’s measured altitude can change markedly over short periods.

Outlets also note that Mont Blanc’s height fluctuates year to year because it reflects the thickness of the snow and ice covering the summit rather than a fixed rock elevation. Euronews says the latest result is close to an end-of-19th-century historical value, while the news outlet and others caution that the current data alone is not enough to determine the effects of global warming. The Guardian adds that in the previous year the measured height dropped by more than a metre, underscoring natural variability driven by Alpine climate conditions, particularly changes in snow and ice accumulation or loss.
