Air India sets up a committee under CEO Tewolde Gebremariam to examine cost-saving measures as the airline posts a large consolidated loss for FY26. Multiple outlets report the airline’s loss stands at about ₹22,238 crore, and the committee focuses on reviewing operating expenses and internal structures.

Reporting also points to specific areas under review, including rationalising teams and office space, and reducing the cost of maintaining Air India’s Airbus A350 fleet. Outlets citing sources say Gebremariam is concerned about higher-than-expected maintenance and engine costs for the A350’s Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines, and that initial discussions with service and maintenance providers are underway. Air India uses arrangements such as Airbus Flight Hour Services and Rolls-Royce’s TotalCare maintenance programme, where costs are reportedly turning out higher than originally anticipated.

Some coverage adds that the CEO is also looking at improving cargo utilisation and considering further restructuring, including potentially merging Air India Express into the main Air India group to streamline functions and reduce duplication, subject to supervisory board approval.
