Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has launched a fundraising campaign with a target of $1 billion by March 2029. The institute says commitments of about Rs 4,100–4,155 crore have already been secured, with the director, Manindra Agrawal, describing it as an unusually large scale for an IIT fundraising effort. The campaign is named “Greater Than Us” and is framed as support for the institute’s next phase of growth.

Outlets report that the funds are organized across three pillars: Foundation, Talent and Frontier. Planned investments include research and institutional infrastructure such as a Central Research Facility and a high-performance computing facility with advanced GPUs, as well as new halls of residence and housing on campus. Another pillar focuses on funding students and researchers, while the Frontier pillar targets fundamental research linked to real-world applications in areas including AI, quantum technologies, cybersecurity and semiconductors.

The Economic Times and India Today highlight a specific alumnus contribution: Rahul Gautam pledges Rs 180 crore to establish the Gautam School of Innovation & Entrepreneurship. Swarajya similarly emphasizes that more than Rs 4,100 crore has already been committed at the start of the campaign, underscoring early donor support.
