Former special counsel Jack Smith’s office, working with the Biden administration’s Justice Department, obtained spreadsheets containing information on at least 639,000 Republican voters, donors, and supporters, according to a new memo released by Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Chuck Grassley. The figures are based on whistleblower disclosures reviewed by Grassley’s committee and reported by multiple outlets.

Outlets describe the records as highly detailed. Grassley’s memo states that the spreadsheet includes identifying information such as names, dates of birth, home addresses, emails, and donor-related data, and includes analysis fields and donation amounts. The material reportedly identifies more than 148,000 people as donors and also includes other categories such as supporters, with some coverage adding that it may include shipping addresses of people who bought MAGA hats and that the dataset could go back to 2005.

Grassley argues the information was overly invasive and unnecessary for Smith’s criminal investigation. Smith previously told the committee that his team acquired financial information and said subpoenas were issued as part of the investigation. The coverage also notes that Smith’s actions have prompted related disputes and complaints, including litigation over phone records.
