The Supreme Court issues notices to Congress, Rahul Gandhi and other INDIA bloc leaders, following a petition that challenges political demonstrations at or near court premises. The court is responding to complaints tied to an Opposition march to the apex court on October 12, when lawyers allege the event and subsequent statements were aimed at putting pressure on the judiciary.

A bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi seeks replies from the respondents, after lawyers raised concerns that political processions and protests within court areas are unacceptable. Petitioners also cite a letter reportedly signed by lawyers expressing worries about attempts to intimidate the judiciary. The bench remarks that “nobody can browbeat the judiciary” and indicates it will consider the matter after receiving responses.

Outlets also note that the petition includes allegations linked to remarks made on social media by Congress’s Kerala unit, including calls on the CJI to resign, with the petition seeking contempt action on that basis. The Supreme Court declines to issue notice on the contempt prayer at this stage, while respondents named across reports include Congress leaders and officials connected to election administration, as well as the Election Commission.
