Finland’s Court of Appeal reduces pro-Biafran agitator Simon Ekpa’s prison sentence from six years to four years. While the term is shortened, the court upholds his conviction on terrorism-related charges.
Finnish public broadcaster Yle reports that the conviction is based on Ekpa’s participation in a terrorist organisation and his public incitement of crimes for terrorist purposes. Sources say the case centers on his alleged efforts to revive an independent Biafra state, tied to the attempted secession in Nigeria’s late 1960s, and the resulting civil war.
Multiple outlets also note that Ekpa had argued on appeal that his actions were politically motivated rather than terrorist. The appeal court acknowledges that conditions in southeastern Nigeria can resemble civil-war circumstances, but does not classify the situation as such. The ruling is reported as not final and may be challenged in a higher court.
