South Africa’s biggest listed-company bosses are earning more as executive pay climbs on the JSE. A PwC remuneration report finds that the median total remuneration for CEOs at the 200 largest JSE-listed companies rises to about R23.2 million, and that roughly half of these CEOs earn above that level.
The increases are linked largely to performance-linked incentives. Across outlets, the report highlights that short-term incentive payouts for top executives rise sharply, alongside stronger outcomes for long-term incentives. Moneyweb reports the report’s figures showing particularly large jumps in both short-term and long-term components, including increases for CEOs and CFOs.
While the outlets focus on different angles—some emphasise the proportion of high earners and others stress the size of the incentive-driven changes—they all point to the same underlying trend: pay growth is broad among the largest listed firms, and incentive outcomes, rather than base pay alone, are a key driver of the higher compensation levels reported by PwC.
