The Income Tax Department has enabled online filing of ITR-2 for the assessment year 2026-27 on the e-filing portal. The department also makes available an Excel utility for ITR-2, allowing taxpayers to prepare and submit the return using the spreadsheet-based tool. ITR-2 is meant for individuals and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) who do not have income from business or profession, but may have other sources such as capital gains receipts.
Both outlets report that the department enabled online filing of other ITR forms earlier for the same assessment year—ITR-1 and ITR-4 were enabled on May 15. The ITR forms for income earned in the 2025-26 financial year were notified on March 30.
For deadlines, the sources state that individual taxpayers filing ITR-1 and ITR-2 must file by July 31. Separately, the deadline for non-audit taxpayers filing ITR-4 is August 31.
