Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, a vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), says he asked former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to withdraw his 2027 presidential bid so that NDC candidate Peter Obi can run instead. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Kwankwaso frames his request as a call for political realignment rather than opposition to Atiku, describing their long history of working together across parties and campaigns.
Kwankwaso also says he made the appeal to a group of Fulani people who visited him, urging them to pass the message to Atiku. In response, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) Presidential Campaign Council accuses Kwankwaso of acting to advance President Bola Tinubu’s interests, characterizing his request as reckless and self-serving and linking it to Obi’s candidacy. The outlets differ mainly in interpretation, while both report Kwankwaso’s core claim that Atiku should step aside.
