Sikhs for Justice lawyer Gurpatwant Singh Pannun says the FBI issued him a “duty to warn” notice after agents visited his New York home, alerting him to what he calls an imminent threat to his life. Pannun says the warning comes ahead of a planned trip from the United States to Canada for an Edmonton, Alberta event on October 18.

The event is described across reports as a non-binding referendum organised by SFJ among the Sikh diaspora. It asks whether Punjab should become an independent state (often referred to as “Khalistan”) and has no legal authority to change Punjab’s status. Pannun tells outlets that the alleged threat will not stop the campaign.

Outlets also note the FBI has not publicly confirmed the warning at the time of reporting, and details about the alleged threat and those behind it are not independently verified in the coverage. The reports place the warning in a broader context of earlier alleged security alerts to Pannun and other SFJ organisers, and recall that Pannun was the target of a foiled assassination plot in 2023 for which US prosecutors brought charges.
