Joshua Foster, a British man, is fined after pleading guilty to causing the death of his two-year-old son, who fell from the fourth floor of a hotel in Cyprus. The Paphos District Court decides he will not serve jail time, and he is required to pay a fine of €3,000 (about £2,500). Several outlets report the judge’s approach and that Foster leaves court following the sentencing.

The incident happened on July 12 at the King Evelthon Beach Hotel and Resort in Chlorakas, on the family’s first day of their holiday. Reports say Foster placed the child on an open hotel-window sill to show him a view of a waterpark, believing there was protective glass. The child fell nearly 40ft and was pronounced dead after being taken to Paphos General Hospital.

Outlets also describe Foster’s accounts to police, his remorse, and the fact he had no previous convictions. Some reporting references alcohol levels in his system at the time, but notes it was not a significant factor in the court case; his legal team says there was no evidence he was drunk.
