The Bombay High Court questions the NIA’s challenge to Sachin Waze’s bail in the 2021 Antilia bomb scare and Mansukh Hiran murder cases, and reserves its order. The NIA seeks an urgent stay of the bail granted by a special court last month. After hearing arguments, the High Court grants an interim stay, and Waze remains in Thane Central Prison.

During the proceedings, the bench asks whether Waze would rejoin police service if released, referencing his earlier reinstatement after long suspension in a different matter. Waze’s lawyer argues that reinstatement is no longer possible because Waze was terminated following his arrest in these cases. The court also questions the NIA’s position that the alleged act amounts to “terrorism” under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), including how explosives are linked to the allegation of terrorism.

Outlets also recap the underlying allegations: an SUV with explosives is found near Antilia in February 2021, Hiran is later found dead, and Waze is arrested in March. The special court previously said the NIA did not establish a prima facie terrorism case. Separately, Waze has also been granted bail in another corruption case being probed by the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate.
