The U.S. Department of Justice is reported to be considering a settlement of its antitrust case against Apple, and the talks are prompting concerns from major app developers. According to multiple outlets citing The Information, officials have indicated a preference for resolving the matter without continuing the litigation and have asked developers to propose changes related to Apple’s control over the iPhone.

Developers including Epic Games and PayPal say a negotiated outcome may not meaningfully curb the company’s alleged anticompetitive practices or deter similar conduct in the future. They question the scope of potential remedies, particularly around interoperability for competing services and devices. The dispute centers on areas such as messaging, digital wallets and payment services, smartwatches, cloud gaming, and multipurpose apps.

Outlets also note that Apple disputes the allegations and argues that broad intervention would constrain its integrated product design. Some functionality has evolved since the lawsuit began—for example, Messages gets RCS support and Apple expands third-party access to NFC capabilities—yet developers say remaining disadvantages may persist. Proton is cited as doubting Apple would agree to terms considered satisfactory.
