A federal high court in Lagos upholds United Bank for Africa’s (UBA) appointment of a receiver/manager to recover debts it says are owed by Stallion Group, in a dispute over about ₦156.03 billion. The judgment, delivered by Justice Daniel Osiagor on Friday, grants the bank’s requested reliefs, affirms the court’s jurisdiction, and validates the receiver/manager’s authority to take charge of mortgaged assets.
The rulings also confirm the validity of mortgage arrangements used as security for the loans and affirm guarantor liability. Outlets report that the court treats the defendants’ challenge as focused on the amount claimed rather than the existence of the indebtedness, and that reconciliation of accounts does not extinguish the debt or defeat UBA’s right to enforce security. The court additionally restrains the defendants from diverting receivables due to them from government agencies, which the bank argued could frustrate recovery.
The dispute began in 2023 when UBA sued Stallion Nigeria Limited and related companies and sought interim orders affecting industrial and commercial assets in Lagos, Port Harcourt and Kano. Different outlets emphasize UBA’s strengthened enforcement position, while also noting procedural and jurisdictional issues raised by the defendants during the case.
