Former SGF Babachir Lawal renews claims that late President Muhammadu Buhari viewed Yemi Osinbajo’s 2023 presidential ambition as immoral and distasteful, particularly because Osinbajo was contesting against Bola Tinubu, whom Lawal says Buhari supported.

Lawal also alleges that a memo seeking approval for Osinbajo’s “take-off” staff, containing about 28 names, was delayed for around three months. He says Buhari used a “green biro” to tick most of the names and remarked that they were “all Yorubas,” while also raising concerns tied to Osinbajo’s church and appointments. Lawal adds that Buhari approved the memo after discussion within the presidential villa and after Lawal took a photocopy directly to Buhari.

Osinbajo’s former spokesperson, Laolu Akande, rejects Lawal’s account in a statement. Akande says Buhari personally offered support to Osinbajo on multiple occasions and publicly commended his campaign at an APC presidential primaries Federal Executive Council meeting. Akande also denies that there was any memo with more than 20 names withheld by the chief of staff, disputes the three-month timeline, and argues Osinbajo’s office staff reflected regional and religious diversity rather than preferential treatment for church members.
