North Korea conducts an underwater test of a new precision-guided torpedo equipped with artificial intelligence, state media reports. Multiple outlets cite the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) saying the test, carried out on Thursday, verified key technical upgrades and was described as successful. The system is identified as “Zam-2.0” by some reports.
According to KCNA, the torpedo uses AI for target detection and guidance, and the test also relates to propulsion technology developed through numerous trials over several years. Reports add that the testing is part of broader naval development efforts. While the outlets largely focus on the same technical claims and timing, they differ slightly in emphasis—some highlight the “super-speed” and precision aspects, while others focus on the AI-enabled functions and the scale of prior propulsion testing.
The reports also note a wider pattern of North Korea publicising weapons-related technology involving AI, including earlier announcements of AI-assisted missile launches, though these references are secondary to the torpedo test itself.
