The Nigerian House of Representatives summons Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele and the Accountant-General of the Federation, Shamseldeen Babatunde Ogunjimi, to explain an alleged ₦75 billion withdrawn from the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC). Lawmakers say the funds were reportedly borrowed for purposes other than UBEC’s mandate and that there are no clear repayment terms.
The officials are expected to appear before the House Public Accounts Committee on Thursday, October 22. In Abuja, lawmakers hold a heated session focused on whether public money earmarked for specific agencies is shifted without appropriate conditions. Committee members stress that any borrowing should come with defined terms, including a concrete repayment timeline, rather than informal assurances. They also indicate the matter is intended to be resolved through direct explanations and commitments from the two officials regarding when the ₦75 billion will be refunded.
