A kindergarten operator and multiple staff in China are jailed for their roles in a poisoning incident affecting more than 200 children. The offences involve tainted food containing lead, and the court finds that hundreds of children are harmed after harmful material is added to meals.

According to reporting from different outlets, a Lanzhou intermediate court in Gansu province sentences six people, including the kindergarten owner to life imprisonment and other staff to prison terms. The BBC reports that the case centres on staff using an inedible paint in food to make it look more appealing. Other coverage describes it as China’s worst food safety scandal in almost two decades, with sentences and fines imposed on those found to have made or sold harmful foodstuffs.

Outlets differ mainly in the level of detail provided about individual defendants and the precise breakdown of sentences, but they agree on the core facts: the use of harmful substances in children’s meals and the resulting lead poisoning.
