Mumbai Indians and head coach Mahela Jayawardene end their association on mutual terms, with the franchise beginning a coaching search ahead of the next IPL cycle. Multiple outlets report that Jayawardene’s tenure concludes after the team’s disappointing IPL 2026 results, which included only four wins, and ahead of preparations for the IPL 2027 mini-auction.

Jayawardene’s relationship with MI spans more than a decade and includes two spells as head coach. He first took charge in 2017 and later returned in 2024 after a period serving as the franchise’s global head of performance (2022 to 2024). Across his coaching stints, MI wins IPL titles in 2017, 2019 and 2020, including consecutive triumphs in the latter two seasons. Earlier reporting also points to wider challenges during 2026, including injuries and player availability issues.

The franchise has shortlisted potential replacements, with interviews expected in the coming week, and MI owner Nita Ambani publicly thanks Jayawardene for his leadership and contributions. Outlets also note he is unlikely to remain with the team in another coaching capacity.
