‘The Simpsons’ brings Apu Nahasapeemapetilon back with his voice heard for the first time in nearly a decade. Multiple outlets report that the character speaks during the Oct. 18 episode “The Revengening,” marking a return after years in which Apu appeared on-screen without being voiced.
The change follows a shift in how Hank Azaria has handled the role. Azaria voiced Apu for close to 30 years, but in 2017 a documentary and ensuing backlash raised concerns about the character’s portrayal of South Asians. Since then, the show has depicted Apu without new dialogue from Azaria.
Across the sources, the main difference is emphasis: Deadline focuses on the historical context of the 2017 backlash and the character’s long silence; TVLine highlights the announcement of the new voice actor; and Variety provides details, including that Sunil Malhotra takes over the role for this episode.
