Samsung-related companies in South Korea agree to acquire a combined stake in Dunamu, the operator of the country’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, Upbit. According to multiple reports, Samsung Securities, Samsung SDS, and Samsung Card will purchase a total of 4% of Dunamu for 612.8 billion won (about $408 million). The shares are bought from an affiliate of Kakao. Samsung Securities will acquire a 2% stake, while Samsung SDS and Samsung Card will each take a 1% stake. The investment follows a broader push by major South Korean institutions to expand into digital-asset businesses ahead of an anticipated regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies and related products.
The companies describe the move as part of developing new opportunities beyond crypto trading. Reported plans include work on tokenized securities, virtual asset services, and blockchain-related financial offerings, including cooperation around issuance and distribution of token securities. Samsung SDS indicates it will apply its capabilities, including in artificial intelligence, to support digital-asset initiatives in combination with Dunamu and related services.
